I think they call this sexism...
In case you were unsure of what she said, here it is:
“We go to the ladies room and the Republican women and the Democratic women and we just roll our eyes. And the Republican women said when we were fighting over the healthcare bill, if we sent the men home…” – Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (D-NH)
Now I’m generally speaking a fan of some facets of the feminist movement. I believe in equal treatment and I rail against misogynist comments and attacks against female politicians both left and right. There is no place for them in civilized discourse and we ought to have reached a place in our society that they are over and done with. Unfortunately we are not and women are still much more likely to be judged by their bra size and waist line than by their ideas.
Having said that, the cure for ill treatment of women is NOT to heap misanthropic scorn upon men. ANY male politician spouting anything remotely like this about (in public) would be hounded out of office by women and rightfully so. Can you imagine a man saying: “If we could just send the women home we might be able to get something done around here.”?
No, you can’t. No because men don’t think it, or that it isn’t said far from the crowds in hushed whispers in the corridors of power, but because they know better. They know that to say such things publicly would be potentially career ending.
Sauce for the goose; sauce for the gander.
Equal rights means equal responsibility.
Sure looks like sexism to me, although it could equally classified as just plain ignorant grandstanding. Then again, we are talking about a politician.
Yes, the political grandstanding is certainly on display, but one would think they would be a wee bit more discreet about their hypocrisy.
Only men can be sexist just like only white people can be racists. It’s just how the world works. Haven’t you taken a sociology class before? OK, that’s not completely fair not all sociology is BS, but any class that has “Studies” in the title is.
If it wasn’t for hypocrisy politicians wouldn’t be able to speak. Sort of like the whole “if Democrats didn’t have hypocrisy they wouldn’t have a political platform” thing.
Arlen Specter would have just interrupted her and told her to “act like a lady.”
But then again, he is now a Democrat, so I am sure we all just misunderstood him.
Wait Specter was a Republican? I always thought it was a typo when they put the (R) after his name.
LOL
Well hopefully the “R” will be behind his name again, as in “Retired.”
OK TBC, now you are just teasing us.
